Over the years, the unequivocal increase in the Earth’s climate has been an issue concerning environmentalists and other scientists. With overwhelming evidence pointing to environmentally damaging human behavior as the culprit for the Earth’s rising temperature, a search for cleaner and renewable energy sources creates a vastly growing alternative energy industry. One of the most widely used forms of renewable energy is hydroelectricity. Like the name implies, hydroelectricity refers to the generation of electricity through use of hydropower. My Extraordinary Adventures Essay I woke up early on the material day I had set for my hunting experience as a young boy. Having tried hunting before as a young boy, I feared going through another experience of falling off from a tree and not getting hurt. I was sure to remain objective this time and hunt for what I wanted and not go on a tree climbing expedition like I did last. At my tender age of 9, I was sure to remain focused on hunting baby monkeys for the purpose of domesticating them. I pitied the baby monkeys because we were going to snatch them from their moms and family and bring them to our home for â€Å"better care† away from the cold. This was a childish thought but very interesting for me as a child. With a strapping on my body, I was indeed sure that what I needed was to hunt down the baby monkey, who I pitied a lot. There was no turning back from the expedition, even despite falling off from a tree from my first hunting trip. There were many myths and stories told to us about the dangers of going hunting as children or alone. None of these stories would put me down since we had to bring home the new guest. I was teased and received so many discouragements form my friends (Strauch, B. 2007). Having read a book, Northeast Philly Girls, the character Eunice was prepared to benefit from the living standards that her cousin Terri gave. A number of things made her fascinated and also encountered new experience. She was somehow determined to comprehend the lives of the people of high social class, and interacts with the locals. Therefore just like Eunice, I had the determination to be successful by not only making it to the forest to hunt, but to also bring home the baby monkey, which was my objective, notwithstanding the lack of experience whatsoever on my part. The eagerness to transition from boyhood to manhood was doubtful. I believed that my success in this hunting expedition was going to be a test to see if I had transitioned into being a man. I was so preoccupied in my mind about the thought of being sought after by my parents while I hunted in the forest. I spread the hunting nets in several directions to increase the chances of capturing at least one of the monkeys. I then set off to the direction behind the animals for the purpose of scaring them. I then ran towards them whilst making funny sounds that irritate the monkeys and have them running away for safety. To me this was supposed to be the best day, though I was so anxious and alive to the fact that my parents wouldn’t allow me to domesticate a monkey in their compound Fortunately I began the chase and all the animals ran in all directions, scampering for safety and I saw three monkeys held in two of the traps I had set. I ran home to get my elder brother to help me come and handle the monkeys in preparation to carry them home. We carried a big box where we would lock them in. It was quite a struggle to catch and lock them in the box. My adrenaline pumped up and I locked them up with all my might, Nervousness overwhelmed me, as I successfully locked up the poor animals. In the course of running to pick up the other trapped monkeys, two of the locked up monkeys slipped and ran off because I hadn’t locked up the box properly. My strength waned steadily and I was already contemplating to surrender when I managed to secure two more baby monkeys. All I did after securing them safely in the box that I locked up tightly was stand and watch my success in amazement. As I planned to go home, I peeped into the box and saw the poor monkey lying dead. I cried because, I caused its death when I hit it on the back. I curse my action. I arrived home amid praises from my family and neighbors. Guilt filled my heart, because I didn’t achieve my goal of bringing home a living monkey. I solely blamed myself for its death. Josephine Baker While Jim Crow laws were reeking havoc on the lives of African Americans in the South, a massed exodus of Southern musicians, particularly from New Orleans, spread the seeds of Jazz as far north as New York City. A new genre of music produced fissures in the walls of racial discrimination thought to be impenetrable. Musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, King Oliver and Fletcher Henderson performed to the first desegregated audiences. Duke Ellington starred in the first primetime radio program to feature an African American artist. And a quirky little girl from Missouri conquered an entire country enthralled by her dark skin, curvaceous body and dynamic personality. Josephine Baker was more than a Jazz musician. She embodied the freedom and expressiveness of that which is known as Jazz. Born Josephine Freda McDonald on June 3, 1906, Josephine Baker was the product of a footloose merchant of whom the family saw little, and a mother [who] supported herself and the children in a slum hovel by taking in laundry. # Later, her mother had three children with another man, Arthur Martin: Richard, Margaret and Willie Mae. Ms. Baker was enrolled in a school in St. Louis until the age of six. When the family was experiencing financial difficulties, she was sent to perform domestic chores in the homes of white families. When only seven, she worked for a woman who frequently beat her, made her sleep in the cellar, and who, after Josephine accidentally broke some china, thrust her hands into scalding water. Neighbors, hearing her agonizing screams, called the police and she was taken to the hospital.# By the age of ten, she had worked as a kitchen helper, baby-sitter and maid. In early adolescence, Josephine Baker went to a vaudeville house at least once a week to watch the dancers and learn innovative dance steps. While still in elementary school, she began dancing part-time in a local chorus line. She left home at the age of 13; waiting tables most of the time and working on stage whenever possible. She joined a group of street musicians who called themselves the Jones Family Band. The work with the Band paid off when Baker acquired her first stage appearance at the Booker T. Washington Theater, St. Louiss black vaudeville house. Also appearing was the all-black dance troupe, the Dixie Steppers. The manager of the Dixie Steppers took a liking to Baker and decided to make her part of the group. Since he couldnt find anything for her to do onstage, she became a dresser, principally for the troupes star, Clara Baker.# By 1920, she was married, divorced and married again - the second time to Willie Baker, a Pullman porter, from whom Baker took the name she u sed on stage. In April 1921, while the Dixie Steppers were touring in Philadelphia, one of the chorus girls hurt herself. For nearly a year, Ms. Baker had been studying the choreography of the show and practicing the steps behind the scenes. Another dancer was aware of Bakers abilities and suggested she fill in for the injured chorus girl. Ms. Baker took her place in the chorus line. Because she was much more lively and animated, she stood out from the rest of the ladies, which, obviously, is not the point of a chorus line. When the lyricist/composer team of Nobel Sissle and Eubie Blakes show Shuffle Along came to Philadelphia, one of the chorus girls from the Dixie Steppers brought Baker to the theater and recommended her for the position. Unfortunately, Ms. Baker was only fourteen, and considered too young to join the company, which was going to Broadway. Baker was so obsessed with the idea of being a dancer for the troupe; she left her husband and went to New York City. Again, she took a job as a dresser and learned all the songs and dances. Ms. Baker caught her big break in 1922 when one of the chorus girls was too sick to perform.
